The important role of EAS Tags in an EAS security system

In this article we’ll focus on the role of the EAS tag.

We think that most retailers will agree with us that high monthly shrink cost caused by shoplifters is something that cannot be avoided when you operate within the retail business.

Or is this actually true?

Well, at Gateway we believe that we can help retailers minimize their monthly shrink cost with 50-90% in average – just by choosing the right combination of EAS antennas and EAS tags. Does this sound interesting?

In this post we´ll take a look at how an EAS security system works and give a deeper understanding and explanation of how to choose the right EAS tags etc.

What is an EAS Tag?

An EAS Tag is one crucial part of an EAS system, the tag is a small “signal transmitter” that you put on the merchandise that you want to protect which will signal to the EAS antennas to make them alarm if they come to close, e.g. if someone is trying to steal the item and take them through the entrance without paying/removing the tag. At Gateway we also call them consumables.

Does it make sense for my store to install an EAS security system and to use tags on valuable items?

Well, that depends on your monthly shrink cost and type/size of retail you have.  There are different products and set up possibilities when it comes to EAS security systems, all depending on the size of the retail, number of retails and type of retail.

Which EAS-Tag fit my specific needs?

Every store is unique and has its own needs regarding security. But in general, your type of sales items determines the type of EAS tags you need.

If you sell clothes, hard tags like Galaxy, Designertag or Minisquare would all be a good choice. The premium of all tags is the concept tag which has multiple lock mechanisms making it extremely hard to remove for unauthorized persons.

When selling groceries you have completely different challenges to overcome, for example tagging frozen items, items that contain liquids or metal.

If you are in the library business, you will want EAS labels that you can activate and deactivate.

How is the quality of Gateway consumables?

When you buy Gateway tags, they come with our quality mark. This means that they are:

  • Fire resistant
  • Quality controlled
  • Tested in our own facilities
  • Shock resistant

To make our tags fire resistant we add a special metal foil on the inside, in combination with a plastic that gives off a distinct smell when exposed to fire. We quality control and test in our facilities in Motala, Sweden. The tags are shock-resistant due to a higher quality casing which protects the sensitive components on the inside.
